Individual Khoikhoi men and women became incorporated into colonial society as low-status servants. Gold, in particular, was a highly sought-after commodity. In the Eastern Cape, many Khoikhoi people were absorbed into Xhosa society. Today, the term slavery is used to indicate a wide range of human rights abuses and exploitative labour practices. There are serious moral questions about African colonialism. The Dutch settlers were therefore forced to look elsewhere for their labour needs. Instead of sparing his life as promised, Pizarro executed Atahualpa on 29 August 1533 and took control of the town of Cajarmaca. While their motives varied, they tended to be optimistic about the potential wealth of the new territories in terms of both natural resources and labor pools. It soon became apparent to the Boers that beyond the Western Cape and Boland regions, the terrain of South Africa was unsuitable for intensive agriculture but very suitable for cattle farming. Of course, not all African societies were equally affected, but countries such as Angola and Senegal suffered heavily. The most dramatically successful was the Haitian Slave Revolt, on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, led by Francois Dominique Toussaint Louverture. The emperor, Aurangzeb, was a harsh ruler who did not tolerate the Hindu population and often destroyed their temples. This was the original model of colonialism brought by the Dutch in 1652, and subsequently exported from the Western Cape to the Afrikaner Republics of the Orange Free State and the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. The Spaniards conquered the remaining Aztecs and took over their lands, forcing them to work in gold mines and on Spanish estates. They introduced Islam and influenced the development of the Swahili language. Reijnier was one of many slave runaways. The term “slavery” therefore has a much broader use than chattel slavery. In May 1498 Vasco da Gama sailed into the harbour of Calicut (now Kozhikode) on the Malabar Coast of India. Families were allowed to live together: wives and husbands could not be separated and their children could not be sold before a certain age. This was the era of the African Diaspora, an all embracing term historians have used to describe the consequences of the slave trade. As the demand for slaves increased in Brazil, the São Tomé traders found a better supply of slaves further south near Luanda and Benguela. This prosperous society built beautiful cities along the coastline from where they conducted trade with Arab merchants. Bartholomeu Dias was the first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa. Portuguese is still spoken in Mozambique, but the majority of the rural population speaks one of the indigenous Bantu languages. The government appointed slave guardians to ensure that these laws were obeyed. Slaves who worked in their free time could save what they earned, and buy freedom for themselves and their families - even against the wishes of the owner. Anglo-Zulu War (1879, in Southern Africa) The British defeat of Zulu King Cetshwayo’s forces marked the end of an era of powerful Zulu kings. The age of colonialism began about 1500, following the European discoveries of a sea route around Africa's southern coast (1488) and of America (1492). Prior to this time, world superpowers such as Portugal, France, and Britain had already set up colonies in Africa. The new arrivals were settled in the fertile valleys of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. He reached Mossel Bay in 1488 and on his way back to Portugal saw the Cape peninsular for the first time and named it the 'Cape of Storms' because of the bad weather the ships experienced there. Only two per cent of the Indian population can speak English. They managed to keep control by making alliances with warring clans and promising to help them against their enemies. Foreign ships on their way to the Americas from Madagascar also sold slaves at the Cape. From 1828 onwards the British introduced a number of administrative changes, known collectively as “the Revolution in Government”. Many missionaries built clinics and brought in medicine that improved infant mortality and immunizations which saved countless millions of black lives. Two minor rebellions of slaves in 1808 and 1825, in which a number of white settlers were killed, made the continued use of slave labour even less appealing. They believed they were doing God's work and helping to 'civilise' the rest of the world. Of the 250 slaves captured, only 170 survived the journey to the Cape. The main purpose of these expeditions was to trade slaves. They arrived with heavily-armed ships and demanded that the Muslim sultans (or rulers) accept the authority of the king of Portugal by paying a large tribute.
